What You Should Know Before Taking Kids to Hawaii

This guide shares essential tips for taking kids to Hawaii, including flight strategies, family-friendly luxury resorts on Maui and the Big Island, and how to make the most of included resort activities. It also covers practical advice for volcano visits, surf lessons, dining, and local attractions, helping families plan a smooth and memorable Hawaiian vacation.

A Family Travel Guide to Maui & The Big Island

Planning a family trip to Hawaii? As a mom of three boys (ages 2, 6, and 8), I just got back from a trip to Maui and the Big Island, and I’m sharing everything I wish I knew before we went.

From flight tips to favorite resorts, and the real story on visiting volcanoes with little ones. Here’s what worked (and what didn’t) so you can plan the ultimate Hawaii family vacation without the stress.

Flight Tips + Jet Lag Advice

First things first: the flight to Hawaii isn’t as bad as you might think.

On the flights, our boys were content with snacks, movies, and eventually slept the rest of the way. We even had a 5-hour layover (thanks, delays 🙃), and survived. Here’s how:

  • 🎴 Pack card games like Uno
  • 🏃‍♂️ Take laps around the terminal and let them race
  • 🍽 Plan to eat a meal at the airport to help pass the time

We chose a flight that landed in the evening, which helped our kids get a full night’s rest right away and adjust to the time zone. Surprisingly, there were no meltdowns (truly a travel miracle).

Best Luxury Family Resorts on Maui & The Big Island

If you’re like me, you want a vacation that feels like a vacation– yes, even with kids in tow.

These resorts delivered comfort, luxury, and family-friendly perks:

Mauna Lani (Big Island)

  • Complimentary kids club with activities like crabbing and fishing
  • Lawn space outside restaurants so kids can play while you enjoy dinner

Four Seasons Hualalai (Big Island)

  • Gorgeous, authentic Hawaiian architecture
  • Fantastic kids’ pool with thoughtful amenities

Andaz (Maui)

  • So many activities included with your stay: lei making, hula lessons, outrigger canoe rides
  • Beautiful grounds and incredible on-property luau

Hyatt Regency (Maui)

  • Penguins, flamingos, and other animals right in the open-air lobby
  • Waterslides are a hit with younger kids

As a preferred partner with these resorts, I’m able to secure exclusive perks and complimentary amenities for my clients. Think room upgrades, daily breakfast, resort credits, and more!

Take Advantage of Resort Activities (Trust Me!)

This is my #1 tip for Hawaii with kids: maximize the included resort activities.

Many luxury resorts offer small-group experiences like outrigger canoeing, lei-making, hula and ukulele lessons, and Hawaiian storytelling. And they’re included in your stay! The challenge is these activities are highly sought after and you need reservations for most of them.

📝 Here’s how to make it happen:

  • Pro Tip: Ask the concierge for a sample activity schedule a couple months before your trip, so you know what to expect
  • Ask for the activity schedule on the Sunday before your stay (most release it weekly)
  • Be ready to reserve your spots immediately– they fill fast

I went outrigger canoeing with just my two boys and our guide, and it’s something we’ll never forget.

Volcano Adventures: What to Know Before You Go

Our boys are fascinated by volcanoes, so we had two major experiences planned: Haleakalā and Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Here’s what to know:

Haleakalā (Maui)

If your kids are prone to motion sickness or altitude issues, be cautious.
Our oldest, who sometimes gets altitude sickness, started feeling sick ¾ of the way up. Despite our hydration prep, we had to turn around at the Visitor Center.

🚗 Tip: Take the drive down slowly. Our middle child got car sick on the descent… which meant a rental car cleanup was in order.

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (Big Island)

It’s about 2–3 hours from the resort areas (like Waikoloa or Kona), so visiting as a day trip can feel long.
I recommend staying one night in Volcano Village. You’ll get to:

  • See the lava glow at night (magical!)
  • Stargaze in an incredible, remote setting
  • Explore the park at a slower pace

Surf Lessons in Maui – A Family Favorite

If you’re considering surf lessons, book them in Maui at Kihei Beach.

My husband and our 8-year-old did a private lesson with Waves Hawaii Surf School and loved it. The area is shallow, calm, and great for beginners. Plus, it’s ideal for families! There’s:

  • A playground right at the beach
  • Kihei Café right across the street (delicious breakfast!)
  • Souvenir shopping, shaved ice, food trucks, and even a botanical garden all within walking distance

What to Know About Whalers Village (Maui)

Whalers Village is a gorgeous, outdoor shopping mall right at the water’s edge, and it’s very popular.
Expect crowds, tight parking (paid), and a lot of bumping shoulders. There are great restaurants and shops here, but I recommend going early or making a reservation if you’re planning to dine.

Dinner Reservations: Book Early, Stress Less

One thing I always recommend to clients (and learned firsthand!) is to make dinner reservations for at least half of your trip before you arrive. Many of the most sought-after restaurants in Hawaii, especially on Maui, book out weeks or even months in advance. Having a few key reservations locked in takes the pressure off and ensures you get to enjoy the spots you’re most excited about.

Also, don’t sleep on the resort restaurants. The convenience alone is amazing (especially with kids), and many offer beautiful settings with some of the best sunset views on the island. You’ll find everything from casual bites to award-winning fine dining, all just steps from your room.
